I want to study alternative energies and impacts on the earth in college and as a career hopefully. What degree in a major would give me the best opportunity to do that?

Environmental Science
Here are some reviews of students studying "Environmental Sciences" at the some of the best colleges: http://www.unigo.com/explorer/reviews/reviewdirectory.aspx?collegeid=0&keywords=&usertype=0&gender=&major=Environmental%20Sciences&race=&politicallearning=&extracurriculars=&transferstudent=&status=hid&State=
But don’t limit yourself to "alternative energy" — usually, you’ll have to know the basics of the field first. Eugene Lang College (one of the colleges of The New School in NYC) has an Environmental Studies program that’s become very popular. This is a fairly new field of study so there are probably scholarships out there for you!
Biology, you can work on biofuels or if you are a chemist, you can work on solar panels.
