This is already being done. In most states, there are programs that let you either pay more to get your power from "Green" sources, or take part in massive federal and state subsidy programs to install systems like Solar Power, High Efficiency Appliances, etc. In my state, you can now purchase a complete solar system for almost half the original price installed.
Check out you local electric utility web site for special subsidies. I bet you will be surprised what has been on offer for many years now.
The problem with Solar and Wind is it is still very expensive, even with the subsidies. In my state of Arizona where it is almost ideal conditions for solar power, it still takes about 18-20 years to break even financially, even with the government paying for almost half the initial cost. Be careful. Don’t believe salesmen and so-called "Environmentalists" when looking into these systems. Get the facts. Do your homework. Calculate the real rate of return/payback time.
Nuclear Power is the only form of alternative energy we have available today that has a chance of providing the massive amount of RELIABLE 24/7 energy we require at close to a reasonable / practicle cost. This is fact.
a wonderful idea. i personally think nuc power is the way to go. the world is so completely buried in petroleum dependency that it will be a very long time before that goes away. it may never go away, at least not for another hundred years or so. the u.s. lacks direction. we have no energy policy. this country has waffled on energy for well over 30 years. it doe sn,t seem like anything will get done until something even worse than the gulf oil spill will occur. renewable energy is usually more expensive than conventional power sources. you can buy into a wind farm in the area i live in. you will pay more for electricity. to lower the price of renew ables, you have to increase availability. this all takes money. money comes from private investors, or from tax revenue.
Yes if you make renewable energy cheaper than current sources people will buy it. Simple economics.
But it has to be reliable. It can’t rely on weather or not the wind blows.
How would "decreasing the price of renewable energy would increase people to buy it?" Market price is centered on research and productivity costs and insufficient demand. Currently, renewable energy sources- except for sea current power has less merits than advertised. Wind turbines break down, kill birds and need lots of open space and wind to generate power. Solar energy depends on battery cells which requires renewal every two decades – and not biodegradable and toxic to environment. Bio-diesel depends on mass production and machine adaptability. Government must regulate loans to grow hectares of corn, dependent on favorable weather throughout the harvest to produce few gallons of oil, consume within a day – does that sound like we would likely see an decreased price to be affordable to all? Hydro electric is the best but environmentalist keep opposing new dams.
Yes it would, but it should also be the "de facto" source of power generation, then we would not have a choice to go to dirty power. Until it makes financial senes to the power industry to switch over, it’s a non starter.
I think that would definitely work, and more people would undoubtedly buy it. The reason they’re having such a hard time making it come to fruition is because the oil companies are doing everything they can to squash it. Few things would thrill me more than to see the entire world use clean, green, cheap, renewable energy. One site I suggest you look at is http://www.earthship.org.
