Those who are only for alternative energy vehicles, how do you replace 220 million?

In less time than it would take to produce more gas. I would think an oil refinery would take the same time to build as a alternative energy refinery would and have the same effects on the environment. Your thoughts?

With the same logic as many pro-drilling people have: Start developing the infrastructure and cars for alternative energy now, and in 10 years, gas prices will go down, because fewer people will be using it.
If everyone were like you we’d still be riding horses. It takes time to move off our oil addiction, but if we don’t start, we’ll still be in Bush’s folly of ‘only oil’ will help us.
It is appropriate that Red Baron has a brain as his avatar. These technologies take time to implement. Start now. Gas is expensive, so people will continue to look for alternatives and be more willing to accept them. They have conversion kits for engines and things like FlexFuel systems are already in mass production. It’s a start.
We should give all American cars to China. They lack the ability to make enough cars to meet their demands
Then drive a Nuclear / battery based fleet.
we have the technology to change all engines into hemp fuel burning have had this technology since Henry Ford made them and they refuse to do it. Hemp can be the thing which saves this planet. laugh me off I have believed it for almost 30 years. we are in a problem we do not grow enough plants on this planet we are killing it. in 5 years of the transfer the atmosphere will normalize and we do not have the time to waste. I am not a drug addit for all of you who will give me a thumbs down but I am taking it from our founding fathers who said to grow it and grow it alot
How would building more refineries help if we already have excess refining capacity as it is? How would drilling for oil in ANWR and offshore help if the high prices we see today are not caused by shortages?
The real problem is that oil is running out. Not this week, not this year, but eventually. Just the idea that it’s going to run out makes the price go up because speculators bid up ‘futures’. There is no shortage now or in the immediate future, and the cost of production hasn’t risen. It’s all just speculation.
We should be working on the next big energy source now. We should have been working on it years ago. But the high prices we’re seeing now are good for the oil companies and they’re the ones making the decisions.
So all the ’solutions’ being suggested–building more refineries, relaxing environmental standards, drilling offshore and in ANWR, more tax breaks and govt. subsidies for the oil companies–none of those are going to bring down the price of gas, only raise the profits of the oil companies.
President Bush announced a few years ago that he was putting lots of govt. money into research for hydrogen cars. What he didn’t say (and the media didn’t point it out either) is that he was taking this money away from hybrid research. Hybrid technology is here now, and it could dramatically cut our consumption in the next few years. Hydrogen won’t make a difference for 30 years at least, if ever. So can you see why Bush did that?
My thoughts would be we will be paying 20.00 a gallon if Obama wins, since he said we will have alternatives easily accessible by 2030 but doesn’t support any other energy right now for the time up until then, with demand rising all over the world and we are not allowed to drill where we have oil, or build any Nuclear Clean Air plants like McCain wants to do, that will provide 700,000 NEW JOBS!

These people are the same ones that think we can’t deport 12 million people. Rational thought is not a long suit here. They may claim to be in their 30’s or 40’s but in all likelihood being summer they are teenagers. They spend nine months of each year being indoctrinated and have no life experience to tell them what is and what is not possible.
It would take over thirty years to switch fuels for all Americans and that is if we started today. Infrastructure to deliver fuel would take a long time in its self then you have to have people buying new for twenty years so that these vehicles trickle down to the lower income folks.
In large cities it would go quicker but in rural areas where people really need trucks and four wheel drive vehicles it will not go well.
What alternative energy do you intend to use? You really can’t just say something and it be true. You must first HAVE the alternative fuel before you can even begin trying to sell it to the public.
