what people think of the old-fashioned Aermotor windmills that you see all over the South and Midwest? Would there be less opposition to wind turbines if they looked more like this:
http://www.spearman.org/8%27Wilbanks.jpg
Instead of this: http://upload.ecvv.com/upload/Info/200801/20083491728865490_small_wind_turbine.jpg
Would you be bothered if your neighbor had one of the old fashioned style wind turbines on their property?
The idea isn't to generate enough electricity for a whole house. The idea is to generate just enough electricity to make it a viable investment. Given that electricity rates in some states are now over 15 cents per kilowatt hour these kinds of units are becoming capable of paying for themselves in as little as six years, while a properly designed unit can last more than thirty years. That's a nominal payback assuming no further increase in utility rates (and we know there will be future increases) which suggests a nominal return on investment of 500%.

Me and a good friend were thinking of possibly in a couple of years starting a small energy business, but were not sure if we should use solar thermal collectors, solar photovoltaic panels or wind turbines? im pretty sure wind turbines wont be much use because the size required to produce enough electricity. We live in England so are not sure which would be best. which would have the bigger market and would be most needed? any questions just ask.
Thanks allot Nick

With the success of renewable energy technologies such as wind turbines and solar panels I was just wondering, can renewable energy systems be incorporated to metal structures?

In average that is. And also, how many wind turbines do you usually have in range of a wind farm?

The Camelot Kennedys are big supporters of "green" energy like wind farms..... except when they are close enough to be seen from the Kennedy compound. Since they Hyannis Port area, with plentiful wind to spin the wind turbines, is a bad place, where would the "for the little guy" Kennedys propose we put them?
LOL... "ask the enginners", say the leftists. Not the Kennedys' fault. Uhh, sport, that had already been accomplished when the decision was made to put them in viewing distance of Fat Ted and Co.'s compound.

Like, imagine a car that has a built in solar panel, wind turbines (it could use the wind resulting from the car moving), and it can use biodiesel and biomass?

Bird strikes on wind turbines are a real occurrence for the super-sized units that utility companies put up, but the birds don't actually get "minced", it's a blunt force trauma. For small scale wind turbines like a homeowner might put up bird-strikes are no more common than birds flying into your window. Some wind turbine owners even put those fake owls on the side of the unit just like some homeowners put those fake owls by their large picture windows.

to get sick ? Its called vibro-acoustic disease, and its caused by sounds below the frequency band of 500Hz that the wind turbines emit. Do you think that this could potentially be a problem with the future development of wind energy ?
Maybe before committing resources and money to building these farms, we should research this more.

I am aware that some applications for noise cancellation have been employed into products but only on a small scale. Dana if you have some other sources other than the link you provided it would be appreciated.
Thanks all for your answers…

There are hillsides full of wind turbines in the Altamont Pass near Livermore, CA. If the turbines are such a good form of alternative energy why is it that most of the time there are only a small percentage of the turbines turning (even when it is windy)?

When you are looking at solar panels or wind turbines and they say how much power they can produce, 2400 watts or 5,000 watts or whatever, what unit of time is that figuring? Is that per hour of ideal conditions? Per day? To me if it says 2.5 kWh, that sounds like 2500 watts an hour, but I'm no expert.

http://abcnews.go.com/WN/wind-power-equal-job-power/story?id=9759949
Nearly billion in money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has been spent on wind power, funding the creation of enough new wind farms to power 2.4 million homes over the past year. But the study found that nearly 80 percent of that money has gone to foreign manufacturers of wind turbines.
So Where Are the Green Jobs Obama promised?
Steel Rat - You didn't read the story and what you are whining about is not addressed in this story.
Steel rat - Last time I was in California I literally saw hundreds, possibly thousands of the windmills generating electric.
What you don't see to understand is that my article states that the money spent in the bailout did not create any jobs here in the USA. While we have manufacturers here in the USA, the money was shipped to an overseas manufacturer.
This was not what Obama promised and I am pointing this out.
If a wind farm works, more power too them. But I should not have to subsidize it with tax money. If it stands on its own and it can make money, then that is great. Otherwise don't force me to send tax money to Washington to subsidize a private company.

I know Kevlar is very expensive and it may not be financially feasible but would it be possible to make wind turbines from kevlar?
If not what polymer would you suggest as an alternative to current materials used in wind turbines?

http://www.wacotrib.com/news/content/gen/ap/US_ExxonMobil_Birds.html
Below is an article describing how "only" 6,400 birds can be expected to be killed by wind turbines.
http://www.awea.org/faq/sagrillo/swbirds.html
How is it that Exxon-Mobil only kills 80 birds over a five year period, but windfarms kill 30,000 birds over the same period, when Exxon-Mobil produces such a large amount of energy compared to wind farms.

I work at a place where people drop off stuff for free, and I salvage what I can and sell the items for just enough to pay for the electricity bill. I was wondering what kind of items that would normally be no good would have a motor in it that would be good for a wind turbine. As a company that pushes for going green, I think having green energy, by making wind turbines, would be great for this small company.
I've read that treadmills have good ones, and older computers. What other things would have them?

- More diesel genarators
- Natural gas power generators
- Wind turbines
- Hydroelectric
- Nuclear energy
- A central solar power system
- Coal
- Wave Power
- Growing crops to convert to Ethanol/Biodiesel to burn in a power plant
PLEASE explain why and talk about the pros and cons. Try to mitigate or solve each con. For example, if you chose solar power, is there gonna be no power all the time at night? PLS i need opinions.

I have been wondering about the wind power, like windmills lately, here's some other things i wondered
Where is one of the largest wind farms in the world? how many wind turbines are on that largest wind farm?
which country generated the mostwind energy? How much did they generate in 2003?
which country generated 686 megawatts of wind enerrgy?
U.S. wind energy can power how many U.S. homes?

I've heard on several occasions that wind turbines are not economically feasible because it takes an inordinate amount of time and money, such that it will never produce enough energy to recoup that which was lost in building the turbine. Is this true? Can anyone give me a source?

Came across this interesting article on Tiny Plastic Wind Turbines that can be placed on rooftops and balconies in crowded cities. Cost very little. These turbines generate electricity which gets stored in cells and can be used to power appliances.
Are such products being installed some place?
What are the costs involved? Installation, maintenance?
