How can we overcome the economic and politaical problems surrounding alternative energy and end our dependance on foriegn oil?

For my report, i have to know the percent of alternative energy that the state of illinois uses. the different types of alt. energy are wind power, Hydroelectric, solar, nuclear, and fossil. if you have a source that would help too. thank you

I'm writing a paper on the benefits of wind and solar energy, in both an economic and social context. Though I appreciate your personal opinion on its benefits, I would REALLY appreciate some possible sources to give me a start on the paper. Please keep in mind that I am not looking for a political discussion or opinions, this is for a graduate-level paper and I am to only write about the benefits of wind and solar energy - so sharing your personal beliefs about the negative effects of alternative energy does not interest me or anyone else and they will be ignored.

What has been done in michigan to make or to do anything with alternative energy/renewable energy. PLease help. I can't find anything on the internet.

Federal and state taxes on gasoline total between 50 and 75 cents per gallon, depending on what part of the country you are in. The federal tax alone on gas is 18.4 cents per gallon. One can only imagine the total tax revenue the federal government collects on gasoline. The figures don't seem to be available anywhere.
The fact remains, the more gas you burn the more taxes the government collects. With a mounting federal deficit, what would be the motivation for the federal government to push for alternative energy, particularly in transportation?
The government's efforts have been concentrated on alternative fuel to produce electricity. The fuel used to make electricity has no federal tax. But, the electricity you consume is taxed. Go figure.

I am a high school student and will be taking an independent study course next year. Essentially, I am responsible for designing and carrying out the curriculum throughout the year, with a faculty adviser checking in with me occasionally. I have decided that the subject of my independent study course will be something along the lines of alternative energy or alternative fuels.

Does anybody know of any text books or helpful resources that I could use during my independent study course? I plan to do research, perform labs and experiments, and visit local labs, refineries, and perhaps a power plant. However, a textbook on alternative energy that I could follow would be very helpful. Even better would be a book with labs or experiments in it that I could perform.

Reagan took over, he dismantled everything Carter had begun. Shouldn't we blame Reagan and every Republican who had similar strategies for this oil disaster? In the 70s, Brazil also started their quest for alternative energy, and it was not derailed by anyone and now they are completely energy independent.

Obama and McCain want change. But the REAL solution to the economy is to get rid of oil and replace it with plug-in-hybrids. People wouldn't pay a gallon at the gas station anymore. It would boom the economy. Why don;t they emphasis the agression of alternative energy?
