How can Obama promise alternative energy within 10 years?
70% of all the cars on the road now are over 10 years old, and there is no affordable alternative in the foreseeable future. Its not going to be any different in 10 years.
Even when a decent alternative to oil is available, it is going to be DECADES before it is the norm.
What a coincidence that Obama won't even be in the white house in 10 years.

Ticked blue makes the best point, and something my wife and I have been saying for the last 3-4 years…we need a Kennedy-esque speech saying that we will be free of foreign oil by 2020. This gives the country something to strive for, something to be patriotic for that isn’t killing brown people, something to being everyone together in the center to show the US can in fact make something still.
Alternative energy is available now, it is just getting the car manufacturers to start making cars that use alt fuels and energy. the technology is there.
Also 10 years ago we were not in two wars, with an economy going down the tubes, paying a significant percentage of our income just to drive to work. Things are different then they were 10 years ago.
He is full of crapolli
He’s not being honest.
Um…where did he promise that?
I know that is a goal…a good goal, but he hasn’t promised that will happen.
Hmmm…I am reminded of Kennedy’s goal for a man on the moon…..everyone thought it was impossible, and yet…
Hes a magical fairy
it will be different in 10 years, but there will still be mostly gasline ICE’s on the road, yes
You are exactly right–even if Obama did get elected and then elected for a 2nd term, he would be out in 8 years…no telling what will happen two years after that.
Its called a plan, McCain’s energy plan is to have more nuclear plants by the year 2030 ( is it also a coincidence that McCain wont even be ALIVE in 2030), I think Ill stick with Obama.
Typical B. Hussein Obama…lie, lie lie, just like a rug. Anything to gather the sheep.
More pie in the sky from the BS baker.
Well if Obama is president…he can sign the bill and the bill will not be revoked by other presidents.
Another empty suit promise.
He can’t. He also has a bogus "reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2025", which is impossible. With expected population growth, we’d have to go back to campfire days to comply.
Here’s the deal Every once of oil in the ground will be burned by someone. If not us, then the chinese or the indians or africans as they industrialize. We might as well just use it up and then come up with something else.
He can’t. He counts on the stupidity of the American people, and his sheep, to ignore his lies, and elect him.
Hate to break it to you, but Detroit unveiled an electric car in the 90s, and sold several of them in CA.
It was a HUGE success. Then, they panicked because of what it would mean to oil companies.
The THEN grabbed all the electric cars back from happy consumers and scrapped them.
Plus, Brazil has been using green energies for decades.
The technology is already there, being used overseas, we’ve just been kept ignorant because that’s what the oil companies want.
The same way he is promising all the other lies.
If the car companies would make a stripped down hybred (no radio no ac etc…) they could make it affordable to everyone. Have the primo version for the people that can afford it and the stripped down version for us paycheck to paycheck people. THe government could also "give" the poor loans through a grant system much like the pell and student loans system. It will never happen but a sure wish it would.
We don’t have access to decades of oil. So someone had better come up with something other than gasoline-burners.
70% of cars may be over 10 years old, but that doesn’t mean that they use 70 % of the gasoline. Newer cars travel more miles per year. Older cars have a tendency to be second cars
So we should never start working on something if we can’t get an immediate payoff?
The reality is, we will eventually run out of oil, and we should not be dependent on other nations for our petroleum fix. We need to develop alternatives. If we don’t start now, when should we?
BTW, I’m not voting for Obama.
Well, when our economy crashes and comes to a halt- it does have a way of reducing our energy requirements.
We certainly won’t get there in 10 years, but I respect his vision that we need to try. Boone Pickens has got half the answer already solved.
I can tell you this- that the "Drill baby drill" strategy won’t much much difference.
It can easily be done if Americans ever get off their lazy butts and just do it. With the way oil prices have been skyrocketing, it won’t be long before oil production is less affordable than bio-fuels.
88% of statistics are made up on the spot. Just as I am sure your "70% of all cars on the road are over 10 years old" is pure poppycock. Regardless, what we have here is a politician making promises that he may or may not be able to keep. *GASP* Call the press! Gee, I wonder if the other side is doing this as well…
obama will say or do anything. he’s a joke.
To your surprise, watch how fast alternative energy emerges into our world. Not because of any political figure, but because of need and for the first time it will be "allowed" to emerge.
Because the know how is here but the oil companies keep them and ideas off the market. Look to South America where some countries have no gas cars.
Bush promised a balanced budget in 2011.
What a coincidence, he won’t even be in the White House in 2011.
You have a good question, however there is a little more to the answer than just a yes or no.
The US has been promising energy independence since I was a kid, and I am far from being a child now!
The problem a pointed out recently by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is that soon as the oil prices drop or we start having a good economy, nobody was to invest in alternate energy anymore.
The Germans started in the 70’s with solar power, and as of now are the world leaders in solar panel development, but they did something the US did do, the stuck with the program!
I believe that Senator Obama wants to have a energy plan were we stick to developing alternative sources, and make them practical to use, and a good developmental time line would be about 10 years.
Also, since you mentioned it, have you ever wondered why in the 125 year history of the US auto, there has never been another engine developed that uses a different source?
125 years ago we didn’t even have radios, and look how far electronics has come!
Yep, we are going to find some wonderful new source of energy- that is not even envisioned yet- do the Research, development, design, production, and have it on the market as the NORM in 10 years! Can we say Kool-aid??? Can we say Deceive? Especially since he doesn’t want to drill, use nuclear power, natural gas (which we have in abundance!). I think the alternative energy he has in mind may be bicycles. Or maybe Donkeys.
That’s not what he said. What he is proposing is that we make a national effort to development alternative energies to the point where we can meet our demand for oil through domestic production. It’s something that should have begun decades ago. It may take longer than 10 years and probably will. What he is saying is that we need to get serious about the effort now otherwise it will never happen. Obama understands psychology enough to know that being vague about the time line or giving a goal that is too far out only encourages procrastination.
He can promise you anything. After all, you bought the community organizer thing.
Obama promises it in 10 years because he’ll be long gone before that date. Listen carefully, THERE IS NO FUEL AS EFFICIENT OR POWERFUL AS GASOLINE IN THE COMBUSTION ENGINE. I build them for god sakes! Electric motors are too weak to drive a car without the help of gas hence "Hybrids". Natural gas is used too quickly and is dangerous due to the highly compressed contents
(your driving a time bomb)!
Ethanol takes an entire football field of corn just to power a jet for a single trip! As of yet, there simply isn’t anything out there better than oil…
A piece of advice, change your engine to diesel and start using cooking oil, it actually works!
