Small Wind Turbines Archives

Alright, basically I want to build a Wind Turbine. A small one, not capable of converting too much wind energy, but just a little bit. I'm planning on building something like this:

but I literally know nothing. I'm learning everything on my own from scratch, I'm paying for it all on my own (still in high school) and I have a good passion for it. I just need some help. One of my main concerns is how to store the energy. I don't want to hook it up to something like Christmas lights for immediate use, I want to be able to store the energy somewhere, building it up, so that I can use it later. Does anyone have any idea how to do this?

I know almost nothing about electricity, including voltage, power, and current, so explain things to me like a child haha. I'm not even exactly sure how to build the small wind turbine itself when it comes to the electrical components.

Honestly any help you can offer would be useful. Thank You!

Where on earth can I find small wind turbine generators, lets say around 2.5 v?

I saw that you can buy 1 large one, costs a lot, or i was reading you can get 4-8 smaller ones,or make them, and do the same. Has anyone tried this?

Any help is very appreciated. I'm looking any manufacturer EXCEPT ones in China, which may be a kind of picky exception, hahaha.
Thank you

How to measure electricity small scale?

For a school project I'm trying to measure the effects of the shape of wind-turbine blades on the energy produced. I'm trying to produce these results using fans and small scale wind-turbines about 1 foot high. What cheap effective device can I use to measure the energy produced by each turbine?

I have a science fair coming up in 1 month and i want to make a wind turbine. I need someone to show me how to do it out of a dc motor (i have took one out of a toy car and another from a robot, both are the same). Any bright idea would help..
Thanks :)

If I make a small wind turbine with a car's alternator, I can charge a car battery.I can probably use a converter to make it fit to charge my laptop or even use on heavier appliances.

Can a small wind turbine produce much energy?

Small wind turbine for experiment?

I wanted to use a small wind turbine for a science experiment, but I can't find any to buy below 0, where can I find one?
I'm not allowed to just build a model.

I'm interested in the Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) produced by a Findland company called "Windside". Can anybody who has one, or knows of someone who operates one, actually attest to the viability of their low-RPM alternator/generators, and wind turbine designs?

http://www.windside.com/consumers.html

I'd like to use a small VAWT on a condo roof, or to power an electric car or truck, like this one:

Thanks for all feedbacks.

How can i make a simple generator?

I am trying to make a very small wind turbine, i would like to know how to make a basic generator for it. I am assuming i need to use some sort of magnet, can somebody get back to me soon please.
it only needs to be a small one, i am just making a small turbine for fun

wind turbine props how to make one?

where or howto make a bladed prop for a wind turbine small 10 and 18 volts max per generator

Wind Energy Question?

Ok,
Were learning about renewable energy in high school, and were now talking about wind energy and turbines and generators and so on and so forth.
Well I was wondering, If you have a small scale wind turbine (fully functional, a little larger than a desk fan) and you had it so that the electricity it made would make a fan (or another electrically powered wind source) turn. If you put that fan in front of the turbine, could it be like never ending?
Or would the generator in the turbine not produce enough electricity to run the fan?

So I have a science fair project to do and I want to know if there are any websites or people out there who know how to make a small model turbine. it doesn't need to produce electricity i just need something that looks like those wind turbines in the pictures, but just a model of it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If all homeowners, invested in grid tied solar, they would have a relatively no maintenance power plan on their roof, that pays back faster in better climates, but would produce consistent power and when paid off, Free power. The deal is when the sun is shining, an you are at work, kids at school, the power company buys your excess power, at night and bad weather they support you. When people like this idea as much as say owning a boat, that paid future sizable dividends, this could be the next .com boom for the economy and we wouldn't need Nukes. Oil will not be replaced overnight but we can be proactive to reduce our dependence on oil. As people buy into owning Solar PV, it will stimulate the economy with jobs. Peace oriented high-tech jobs. For manufacturers, installers, hardware manufacturers, advertising, etc. Make renewable Energy Not War. How many new jobs has Oil created lately and how much have they cost US in subsidies. How many new jobs have defense contractors created lately, and how many have died to keep their stock prices up? Solar PV is an excellent investment and considered an 18% return. It sits on your roof like a small car would do in your garage, is warranted for 25 years, connected to the grip for backup power and the power company buys your power. Someday soon you will own some sort of solar electric, solar hot water, small wind turbine on your garage roof, and plug in Hydro car. Oil companies don't want you to do this. For obvious reasons. You may want to rethink solar and get some local estimates. The Naysayers are parroting Oil and Nuclear propaganda coming from GE and Exxon-Mobile and BP none of whom pay USA income tax.

Alternative to ugly wind-turbines?

I would love to have a wind turbine in my garden, to generate electricity but I am sure most of you will do to, and the reason you don't have it (and would agree with me) - everything they sell nowadays is big and ugly, especially if your garden is small and you are not allowed to install anything big on your roof.
I wonder why they don't make wind turbines in the shape of anemometer - they would not take too much place, and would look good anywhere.
Or make a sleek wind turbine based on the design of those advertising banners they put outside of the stores- they spin like crazy in the wind.
Do you know any reasons why they don't exist?
Pobept K - I love big industrial ones, they look so beautiful, especially when there are many of them, but if you have a small garden - every small wind turbine is still big for it, and look rediculous there, taking half of it.

I have a small remote cabin with good sun access and a fairly steady breeze that I visit about once a month. I want to install solar panels and a small wind turbine, but all the books I have read seem pretty complicated. I would like step by step instructions on how to install this system with recommendations on panels, charge controllers, inverters, and batteries. Also feel free to recommend low voltage appliances and lighting. Please feel free to dumb it down for me. I will be doing the instal myself as the cabin is only just now framed in with not interior walls. Thanks!

I am making a small wind turbine(also known as a windmill) for my schools science fair this is, I have an idea for its design, but i need the basic info. about it first. I need to know the basic componants if possible, and how to build a small one, with about enough electricity to power a lamp or two. If its not to much to ask I would like to know (as basic as possible) how it converts it into electricity. Thanks in advance. All answers are apreciated :)

Where can I get a small generator?

I need a small generator to convert the energy from a SMALL wind turbine. I need recommendations and links, hopefully. If I cant find one, should I make one? The wind turbine is extremely small, its going to be attached a few inches from a car muffler. This is because its for a science fair and we've got to be innovative. Any ideas? thanks.

If homeowners and small business invested in solar and residential wind turbines, it would not only create jobs but reduce the need for any more power plants than we have already.

Where can I buy a small generator?

I am making a very small scale model of the wind turbine for science class. I need to find a really small generator. Where I can buy that? If there isn't one, if you know if any substitution for a device converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, please refer me to it. Thanks!

My small wind turbine produces 3.7 volts when spinning freely. When it is attached to a LED bulb, it slows almost to a stop and produces nothing. The polarity is correct and the wires are attached to the correct leads (leeds?) Why isn't my bulb lighting up?

One of these pieces of legislation is broadly accepted by alternative energy advocates and is considered an industry "Best Practice", the other is considered the greatest barrier to the adoption of alternative energy options and job creation in the country.

A. Legislation that requires a "backfeed prevention circuit" (a type of GFCI) on all Solar Panel and Small Wind installations to prevent the back-feeding of electricity during a power outage which can cause electrical workers to be electrocuted or...

B. Legislation that prevents owners of small wind turbines and solar panel installations from selling electrical power back to utility companies?

(Both of these pieces of legislation were paid for by Utilities Industry Lobbyists, which one do you think is evil)...

Hello,
I am looking for a relatively cheap and simple charge controller to connect
one solar panel and one small wind turbine to a charge controller that would connect to a battery.
Could you recommend to me to such a controller?
Now since there would be times that the solar panel would be producing no WATTS (night) and times that the wind turbine would be producing 0 watts (no wind), I want it to have no effect on one another but yet charge my battery, how should I connect them?

Many Thanks,
Jonathan
